A down parka is an essential item of clothing to get your through winter. Whether you are spending the winter months in a mild climate or an area with a high windchill you can rest assured that a good parka will protect you from the elements.

Typically it’s stuffed with down and has a large hood that can be lined with or without fur. Down is the best thermal insulator because it is very efficient at keeping in heat. These parka’s also have the advantage of being very light in weight due to the down filling. A parka that is filled with a synthetic material instead of down is often very heavy and not as warm.

Lined with down feathers this is one of the warmest parkas you will ever wear. Add a snap-off/on hood to it and you have the ultimate winter warmth.

A down parka can come waist length, or cover your hips and even can be ankle length if that is your choice, but then these are called down coats. Thickness will depend on the type of down used; some manufacturers use duck down, some use geese (which is the absolute best down available) and there are many different counts and qualities of down. The higher the power count, the warmer the down parka will be. Also, the higher the count, the less thick your jacket will be because the insulation will be better in the cold climates and winds of winter. So, if bulk is going to be an issue for you, you should purchase a goose down jacket which is the ultimate in both warmth and quality. With the proper stitching and design work, all the down filling stays exactly where it should within the garment and your piece of clothing will look fantastic for many years.

Wind proofing and breathability is a given on these types of jackets, and materials to repel snow and water are always present in the modern parka. Temperatures in which to wear these parkas are normally shown on the tag of the garment. Most range from minus twenty to zero Fahrenheit but there are warmer ones out there. Buy one that has a drawstring at the waist and/or the hem, and elastic wristbands, for added protection from the wind.

Try to get a machine washable garment and one that has the style features you are looking for. Just because it is a sub zero piece of clothing does not mean it cannot be stylish. Many flattering designs are available and in all the colors of the rainbow to choose from. Going with a well known brand name will ensure you are getting the quality you will need in the type of climate you live and work in. If you buy a jacket a bit larger than you normally would, then you can be sure your extra sweater will fit underneath.
